Past Chargers Drafts

ryanmathews2010 Chargers Draft Re-Visited

Round 1, Selection 12 (Traded their 28th overall selection, 2nd rounder, 4th rounder, and linebacker Tim Dobbins in exchange for the Miami Dolphins’ 12th overall selection, 4th rounder and 6th rounder)

Ryan Mathews – RB, Fresno State

Despite all of the pre-season commotion, Mathews struggled to live up to the hype. Just when he would start playing like the running back they expected when they drafted him, he would either fumble or end up getting hurt. There is still plenty of time for him to develop into the dynamic ball-carrier that the Chargers were hoping for, but he’ll need to stay healthy and learn to protect the ball better if he hopes to keep his job.

Round 2 pick was traded to the Miami Dolphins to move up in the first round

Round 3, Selection 79 (Traded their 91st overall selection, 6th rounder from the Dolphins, and 2011 4th rounder to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for the 79th overall pick)

Donald Butler – LB, Washington

Although his future looked bright and it seemed very likely that he would see some decent playing time, Butler ended up injuring his Achilles’ tendon before training camp was over, effectively ending his season.

Round 4, Selection 110 (From the Dolphins)

Darrell Stuckey – S, Kansas

After displaying enough to the coaches to earn himself a solid shot at the starting strong safety spot, an injury kept him off of the field. Once he recovered, he was never able to regain the spot and only saw the field once throughout the entire season.

Round 5, Selection 146 (Traded their 159th overall selection and 2011 5th rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for the 146th overall pick)

Cam Thomas – DT, North Carolina

Coaches weren’t as impressed with him as they expected to be, and he struggled to get on the field. During the second half of the season, he worked his way into the nose tackle rotation where he displayed some play-making potential.

Round 5, Selection 168

Jonathan Crompton – QB, Tennessee

A very questionable pick, Crompton didn’t pan out as the Chargers had hoped. He was cut before the regular season began. He was eventually picked up and added to the practice squad by the New England Patriots.

Round 6 pick was traded to the Arizona Cardinals

Round 7, Selection 235

Dedrick Epps – TE, Miami (Fla.)

The tight end position was stacked at the beginning of the season and Epps was never able to push himself high enough on the depth chart to avoid final cuts. He eventually signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he played in three games.

Round 1, Selection 16

Larry EnglishLarry English – OLB, Northern Illinois

English appeared in all 16 games as a rookie, earning two starts.  He recorded 2 sacks and 26 tackles in 2009. He continued to be a disappointment in 2010 despite several injuries to the linebacking corps. In eight appearances, including two starts, he tallied 12 tackles and three sacks.

2008 Chargers Draft Re-Visited

Round 1, Selection 27

CasonAntoine Cason – DB, Arizona

Playing in nickel and dime packages, Cason recorded four interceptions and 80 tackles during his first two seasons with the Chargers. He broke out as one of the Chargers' premier defenders in 2010, providing a great compliment to fellow cornerback Quentin Jammer. During the season, he tallied 57 tackles, 17 defended passes, and four interceptions in 15 starts.

2007 Charger Draft Re-Visited

It should be noted, this was the first draft after the Chargers fired coach Marty Schottenheimer

Buster DavisRound 1, Selection 30

Craig "Buster" Davis – WR, LSU

Since being selected in the first round, Davis has appeared in 26 games with only two starts. During that time, he has caught 51 passes for 558 yards and two touchdowns. His slight increase in production during the 2010 season was due in large part to numerous injuries. He most likely won't remain a part of the team for much longer.

2006 Chargers Draft Re-Visited

Round 1, Selection 19

Antonio Cromartie – DB, Florida St.

A freak athlete, Cromartie barely played at FSU before jumping into the NFL draft pool.  After playing his first season in nickel and dime coverage during his rookie season, Cromartie burst onto the scene in 2007.  With ten interceptions, three off Peyton Manning Cromartie was a Pro Bowler and what appeared to be a shut down corner.  In 2008 and 2009, Cromartie played in all 32 of the Chargers games, but his lack of desire to tackle and off-the-field issues forced the Chargers to trade him to the Jets in early 2010.With the Jets, Cromartie still lacked consistency and proved to be a vulnerable spot in the New York secondary.

  • Norv Turner: Antonio Gates is back to where we want him
It has been a rough couple of years for Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. He missed six games in 2010 and three games, along with parts of others, last year because of a foot injury. He’s still been productive — 17 touchdown catches — but his presence in the lineup has been missed for the…
  • Junior Seau’s restaurant closes
The San Diego restaurant that Junior Seau owned is going out of business. Trustees of Seau’s estate announced the decision to close Seau’s The Restaurant on Wednesday, two weeks after Seau committed suicide. The trustees said the restaurant’s ability to be profitable without Seau’s leadership was in question. Seau’s described itself as the largest sports…
  • Bike stolen from Seau’s home recovered
Last night, a disturbing report emerged that a burglary occurred at linebacker Junior Seau’s home only five days after he died there.  The good news, if there is any, is that police have recovered the $500 bike stolen from the garage. The bicycle, which belongs to a friend of Seau’s, was found in the possession…
  • Junior Seau’s home burglarized
Here’s a sad and pathetic footnote to the death of linebacker Junior Seau.  His house in Oceanside, California was burglarized last week, according to the North County Times. Police say that, on May 7, someone used the dog door to force entry through the garage door, rummaged through cabinets in the garage, and stole a…
  • The Chargers have signed all their draft picks
Cross another team off the list. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers have reached agreement on a four-year contract with strong safety Brandon Taylor. That makes them the fifth team in the league to sign all of their draft picks. The Chargers targeted Taylor and traded up with the Dolphins…
