jordantodmanWith the 183rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select Jordan Todman, running back from UConn.

The Chargers are getting huge value in the sixth round with a player like Todman. He’s a very well-rounded runner who uses an impressive combination of speed and toughness to rack up yards. With his speed and elusiveness, he makes defenders miss and picks up extra yards. When he runs inside, he does a good job of lowering his should and pick up the tough yardage. During his time at UConn, he proved time and time again that he could carry the team on his back, basically making up the Huskies offense in 2010. He’s durable and tough, and also has experience in the return game.

His lack of size is the scariest part of his game. He doesn’t shy away from hits, which is a good and a bad thing. He has a small frame that leaves him susceptible to injuries and makes him a liability as a pass blocker. He’s also not a huge threat to catch passes out of the backfield, which most people feel is a huge need for running backs of his size.

With injury concerns swirling around second-year running back Ryan Mathews, back-up runner Mike Tolbert’s future with the team uncertain, and third-down running back Darren Sproles possibly headed out of San Diego, the addition of Todman is smart. He may even be able to replace Sproles as the third-down back if he can continue to work on his catching and pass-blocking.

The thing that makes this such a good pick is the value. Many scouts had Todman rated as a second or third round prospect, and the Chargers were able to draft his services in the sixth round. He should provide some sort of spark for the Bolts’ offense this season if he continues to grow into a third-down back role.

  • Norv Turner: Antonio Gates is back to where we want him
It has been a rough couple of years for Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. He missed six games in 2010 and three games, along with parts of others, last year because of a foot injury. He’s still been productive — 17 touchdown catches — but his presence in the lineup has been missed for the…
  • Junior Seau’s restaurant closes
The San Diego restaurant that Junior Seau owned is going out of business. Trustees of Seau’s estate announced the decision to close Seau’s The Restaurant on Wednesday, two weeks after Seau committed suicide. The trustees said the restaurant’s ability to be profitable without Seau’s leadership was in question. Seau’s described itself as the largest sports…
  • Bike stolen from Seau’s home recovered
Last night, a disturbing report emerged that a burglary occurred at linebacker Junior Seau’s home only five days after he died there.  The good news, if there is any, is that police have recovered the $500 bike stolen from the garage. The bicycle, which belongs to a friend of Seau’s, was found in the possession…
  • Junior Seau’s home burglarized
Here’s a sad and pathetic footnote to the death of linebacker Junior Seau.  His house in Oceanside, California was burglarized last week, according to the North County Times. Police say that, on May 7, someone used the dog door to force entry through the garage door, rummaged through cabinets in the garage, and stole a…
  • The Chargers have signed all their draft picks
Cross another team off the list. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers have reached agreement on a four-year contract with strong safety Brandon Taylor. That makes them the fifth team in the league to sign all of their draft picks. The Chargers targeted Taylor and traded up with the Dolphins…
