steveschillingWith the 201st pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select Steve Schilling, guard from Michigan.

If the Chargers were looking for one offensive lineman that could play a number of positions and provide excellent depth, they nabbed a perfect player in Schilling. He’s a big, athleticism offensive lineman who can step into either the guard or tackle position and make his presence felt. He doesn’t do a great job of driving defenders off of the line and needs to work better on playing low. However, he works terrifically as a pulling guard in the run game and does a tremendous job of getting to the next level and blocking downfield.

The Chargers struggled last season to keep their offensive line together, due either to injuries or lack of depth. Although their starting lineup is strong when healthy, Schilling should still be able to provide plenty of depth across the entire offensive line due to his strength and athleticism.

Although he may never be a full-time starter in the NFL, he’s a great utility player who can fill holes and play a variety of different positions. The depth of the Chargers’ offensive line saw a nice increase with the pick of Schilling.

Grade: B+

  • Norv Turner: Antonio Gates is back to where we want him
It has been a rough couple of years for Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. He missed six games in 2010 and three games, along with parts of others, last year because of a foot injury. He’s still been productive — 17 touchdown catches — but his presence in the lineup has been missed for the…
  • Junior Seau’s restaurant closes
The San Diego restaurant that Junior Seau owned is going out of business. Trustees of Seau’s estate announced the decision to close Seau’s The Restaurant on Wednesday, two weeks after Seau committed suicide. The trustees said the restaurant’s ability to be profitable without Seau’s leadership was in question. Seau’s described itself as the largest sports…
  • Bike stolen from Seau’s home recovered
Last night, a disturbing report emerged that a burglary occurred at linebacker Junior Seau’s home only five days after he died there.  The good news, if there is any, is that police have recovered the $500 bike stolen from the garage. The bicycle, which belongs to a friend of Seau’s, was found in the possession…
  • Junior Seau’s home burglarized
Here’s a sad and pathetic footnote to the death of linebacker Junior Seau.  His house in Oceanside, California was burglarized last week, according to the North County Times. Police say that, on May 7, someone used the dog door to force entry through the garage door, rummaged through cabinets in the garage, and stole a…
  • The Chargers have signed all their draft picks
Cross another team off the list. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers have reached agreement on a four-year contract with strong safety Brandon Taylor. That makes them the fifth team in the league to sign all of their draft picks. The Chargers targeted Taylor and traded up with the Dolphins…
