andrewgachkarWith the 234th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select Andrew Gachkar, outside linebacker from Missouri.

After spending the past couple of years at Missouri being overshadowed by Sean Weatherspoon and Aldon Smith, Gachkar hasn’t exactly seen much spotlight. He’s a hard-nosed player who works hard whether he’s on the field or off the field. Despite his lack of elite size, his effort allows him to make plays on the field.

Despite his effort, he doesn’t have too many of the physical tools that translate to an NFL-caliber linebacker. The one impression physical tool that he does have, however, is speed. He turned in a 4.51 at his Pro Day that would have been fifth-best overall had he been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. There is some potential, but he will be a major project for the Chargers.

The Chargers were looking to address their lack of linebacker depth during the draft, and after making a questionable selection with Jonas Mouton in the second round, they continue to take huge projects with Gachkar. However, Gachkar is worth a seventh-rounder way more than Mouton is worth a second-rounder.

He has tons of heart and a limited physical tools to work with, but he doesn’t have what it takes to be much more than a special teams/practice squad kind of guy in the NFL. It’s hard to tell with little-known prospects like this, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up that he produces for the Chargers.

  • Norv Turner: Antonio Gates is back to where we want him
It has been a rough couple of years for Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. He missed six games in 2010 and three games, along with parts of others, last year because of a foot injury. He’s still been productive — 17 touchdown catches — but his presence in the lineup has been missed for the…
  • Junior Seau’s restaurant closes
The San Diego restaurant that Junior Seau owned is going out of business. Trustees of Seau’s estate announced the decision to close Seau’s The Restaurant on Wednesday, two weeks after Seau committed suicide. The trustees said the restaurant’s ability to be profitable without Seau’s leadership was in question. Seau’s described itself as the largest sports…
  • Bike stolen from Seau’s home recovered
Last night, a disturbing report emerged that a burglary occurred at linebacker Junior Seau’s home only five days after he died there.  The good news, if there is any, is that police have recovered the $500 bike stolen from the garage. The bicycle, which belongs to a friend of Seau’s, was found in the possession…
  • Junior Seau’s home burglarized
Here’s a sad and pathetic footnote to the death of linebacker Junior Seau.  His house in Oceanside, California was burglarized last week, according to the North County Times. Police say that, on May 7, someone used the dog door to force entry through the garage door, rummaged through cabinets in the garage, and stole a…
  • The Chargers have signed all their draft picks
Cross another team off the list. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers have reached agreement on a four-year contract with strong safety Brandon Taylor. That makes them the fifth team in the league to sign all of their draft picks. The Chargers targeted Taylor and traded up with the Dolphins…
