Before the week 15 game vs. the 49ers I sent out a tweet that said, Don't be surprised to see the Chargers Franchise Tag Vincent Jackson.  At the time it was a bit out there and I had plenty of people respond and wonder if I had lost my mind.  That night Jackson caught five passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns and the #pay83 hash tag was born.  If the "Franchise tag" stands in a new CBA will be another discussion, but for the time being I wanted to let you know...the Chargers will be using the Franchise Tag on Vincent Jackson.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson has been designated the team’s Franchise Player.

Jackson, 28, was designated a “non-exclusive” Franchise Player, which means that he can negotiate with other teams. Should he receive an offer from another team, the Chargers can either match the new club’s offer or receive two first-round draft choices as compensation. In addition, the Chargers and Jackson may negotiate a long-term contract.

“Vincent has been a valuable contributor to our team,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “We want him to be a Charger.”

Jackson will receive a one-year tender at the average of the top five salaries among receivers last year.

The last player to be designated the team’s Franchise Player was running back-kick returner Darren Sproles in 2009.

The San Diego Chargers announced today that Special Teams Coach Steve Crosby’s contract will not be renewed for the 2011 season. Crosby was the Chargers’ special teams coach for nine seasons (2002-10).

“We appreciate Steve’s hard work and dedication to this team over the past nine seasons,” said Head Coach Norv Turner.

Quarterback Philip Rivers, tight end Antonio Gates and left guard Kris Dielman were voted by the NFL coaches, players and fans to the AFC Pro Bowl squad, the NFL announced today. Gates and Dielman were selected as starters. The 2011 Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Rivers, Gates and Dielman are all part of an offense that’s ranked second in the NFL in total offense at 392.1 yards per game and fourth in scoring at 27.2 points per game.

Gates made his seventh-consecutive Pro Bowl despite missing five games with a torn right plantar fascia that occurred during a Week 6 game at St. Louis and left him with acute pain for the remainder of the season. He appeared poised for a second consecutive 1,000-yard season before the injury and was on pace to break his own NFL record for touchdowns by a tight end. Through Week 7, he caught 35 passes for 540 yards and eight touchdowns, and he will finish the season with 50 catches and a team-high 782 yards and 10 touchdowns.

  • Nick Hardwick to continue playing
Stalwart Chargers center Nick Hardwick will not retire at the age of 30. He informed Kevin Acee of the recently renamed U-T San Diego that he plans to continue playing football after briefly considering retirement. An unrestricted free agent, Hardwick doesn’t fear that his indecision will hurt his market value. “My commitment is full throttle,”…
  • Vincent Jackson expected to hit open market
The Chargers would have to pay Vincent Jackson a lot of money to use the franchise tag on him — more than $13 million. That’s why he’s expected to hit the open market, and he’s not expected to stay in San Diego. “I don’t see any way he’s back [in San Diego]. The Chargers won’t…

  • Chargers expected to waive Marcus McNeill
Chargers left tackle Marcus McNeill got his big contract in October of 2010. It was considered risky because of his health, and he wound up only playing nine games in 2011. The 28-year-old two-time Pro Bowler is expected to be waived in early March according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  That would free…
  • Fan sues over NFL conduct policy, says he has a right to swear
Last year we passed along word of a legal challenge to the NFL’s conduct policy for fans. Now the fan challenging that policy is coming forward to press his case and say he shouldn’t have been kicked out of a stadium for dropping an F-bomb is filing a lawsuit over it. Eric Holguin, an off-duty…
