Jackson designated Chargers’ Franchise Player

Before the week 15 game vs. the 49ers I sent out a tweet that said, Don't be surprised to see the Chargers Franchise Tag Vincent Jackson.  At the time it was a bit out there and I had plenty of people respond and wonder if I had lost my mind.  That night Jackson caught five passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns and the #pay83 hash tag was born.  If the "Franchise tag" stands in a new CBA will be another discussion, but for the time being I wanted to let you know...the Chargers will be using the Franchise Tag on Vincent Jackson.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson has been designated the team’s Franchise Player.

Jackson, 28, was designated a “non-exclusive” Franchise Player, which means that he can negotiate with other teams. Should he receive an offer from another team, the Chargers can either match the new club’s offer or receive two first-round draft choices as compensation. In addition, the Chargers and Jackson may negotiate a long-term contract.

“Vincent has been a valuable contributor to our team,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “We want him to be a Charger.”

Jackson will receive a one-year tender at the average of the top five salaries among receivers last year.

The last player to be designated the team’s Franchise Player was running back-kick returner Darren Sproles in 2009.
