CasonAntoine Cason, Cornerback, #20

Ht: 6' 1",  Wt: 195, Age: 24, 3rd year in NFL

Playing football is a family affair for third-year cornerback, Antoine Cason. Cason has a wealth of football knowledge available at his fingertips.  Cason’s father, Wendell, was a defensive back for the Oregon Ducks, and then went on to play cornerback and safety for the Atlanta Falcons in the 80’s. His cousin, Ken-yon Rambo, was a receiver at Ohio State before playing for the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets and the Calgary Stampeders. Another cousin, Aveion Cason, was an All-America tailback at Illinois State and later played for the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams. All told, more than a dozen of Cason's family members have Division I college football experience.

Cason is a Southern California native, born and raised in Long Beach.  At Los Alamitos High, he played running back, defensive back and ran track. When Cason was in high school, he attended the Chargers training camp, which was held at the Home Depot Center in Carson.  He loves to tell the story:  “I'm 15, 16 years old seeing LT, Quentin Jammer, Drew Brees, and now I'm in the locker room with some of these guys.”

Anotnio Garay, nose tackle: 6'4", 335 pounds, 31 years old, wears No. 71

"To play that position, you really have to be a stud." -- Ted Washington, 17-year NFL nose tackle

"You've got to be a bad ass to play there, no question.” -- Rex Ryan

"Oh, man, everything hurts. You just get used to it.” -- Casey Hampton, nose tackle, Pittsburgh Steelers

"The only option is football and the only position to play is nose tackle." – Antonio Garay, nose tackle, San Diego Chargers

Many adjectives can be used to describe Antonio Garay. Motivated. Tough. Intelligent. Persistent. Relentless. And diverse. Antonio Garay was born in Rahway, New Jersey, to melting-pot parents. The oldest of three children, his mother, Marsha, is devoutly Jewish, and his father, Tony, comes from a family that is Puerto Rican, Costa Rican, Jamaican and Catholic. His father was one of the most highly-touted NFL defensive linemen in the country in 1971, and spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots and New York Jets. Growing up in New Jersey, Garay says, “I never had (NFL) posters up. I was never a super fan. When I was younger, I was [always] thinking about ‘who I was going to play for’ and ‘which one of these guys was going to be a teammate.’ I was always very goal oriented. I would write down [everything], ‘how many plays am I going to make this week?’ When I was younger, in order for me to get to college, I [had] to do well in school. I just became very goal oriented.”

Vincent-JacksonThe Return of Vincent Jackson

After two back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons, and a ten-week contract holdout, He’s Baaaacckk, Charger Faithful!  The 6’5”, 230#, 27-year-old superstar, clutch wide receiver, Vincent Jackson Returns to once again help propel his team to the playoffs.

Vincent Jackson explained how he and Philip Rivers have been getting it done.  “One of the staple routes of our offense is the 9 stop, [the fade], whether its press or off coverage.  It’s good against both because you’re going to get defensive backs thinking you’re going up the field and you snap it off, you break down, and boom you’re a stationary target for the quarterback.  It gives you an opportunity to get some yards after the catch because the defense backs, especially teams that like to play off, they have to come down real fast and if they’re not playing tight enough, that ball is out on time, it’s automatic, I get the ball in my hands and I have a yard or two to make a move on the guy.”  Jackson is notorious for gaining yards after the catch, and notably touchdowns after the catch.

malcom-floydHe jumps up, football in hand, a 1000-watt smile on his face … and his shoulder pads hanging outside his jersey.  Charger fans know right away who just made that circus catch – it’s Malcolm Floyd, also known as “M-80” because he wears No. 80 or “Pads” because after every crazy, aerial catch, he needs help repositioning his shoulder pads. “He makes a spectacular catch every day.”  That’s how Head Coach Norv Turner describes the 29-year-old Floyd.  At 6’5”, 225#, he’s as tall as Randy Moss, and one of the tallest wide receivers in the league.  With the Chargers as the only team in the NFL to average 300-plus yards per game through the air, Floyd is a dependable deep threat who can out-jump almost every defensive player trying to cover him. [Stats: No. 54, Inside Linebacker. Height: 6-1; Weight: 235. Age: 31, 8th year in the NFL, all with the San Diego Chargers.]

Charger fans at the Q wait with anticipation. The game is about to begin, and the starting defense is being introduced. The announcer begins: “At inside linebacker, number 54 from the University of Maine …”, and the Q erupts with cries of “COOOOOOP!!” On cue, two-time defensive captain Stephen Cooper bursts out of the tunnel, and He Is Fired Up. Charger fans love Coop! We forgive him his transgressions because he inspires us. Coop loves the game. He loves the game! If there is a player scampering downfield, pumping his fists after a 4th down goal-line stand, it’s Coop! If there is a player prowling the sidelines, exhorting his teammates to victory, it’s Coop! It’s always Coop. Inspirational, charismatic … Coop.
